The Government has announced major reforms to the law on leasehold, including making it easier and cheaper for leaseholders to buy the freehold or extend their lease.
The reforms should affect up to 4.5 million households in the UK. Legislation will be introduced in the upcoming session of Parliament. Catherine Callaghan QC has advised the UK Government on the compatibility of its reforms with landlord property rights under the Human Rights Act 1998. Further information can be found here and press coverage here.
Catherine was previously engaged by the Law Commission to provide an independent opinion on the proposed reforms. Further information on that opinion and the Law Commission report on valuation reform can be found here.
