Madelaine accepts instructions in all areas of Chambers’ practice. She has particular experience in commercial disputes, public law, human rights, public international law and employment law. Recent highlights of Madelaine's experience include assisting with the following significant cases:

  • Ukraine's landmark inter-State case against the Russian Federation before the European Court of Human Rights alleging multiple violations of Convention rights (with Tim Otty QC, Jason Pobjoy and others).
  • A high-profile challenge to the Government's policy to remove individual asylum-seekers to Rwanda (with Sam Grodzinski QC, Paul Luckhurst, Jason Pobjoy and others). 
  • AXA's successful resistance of a strike out application brought by Santander in respect of claims valued at more than £640m (with Andrew Green QC, Fraser Campbell and Timothy Lau).
  • A multi-jurisdictional fraud claim brought against 17 separate defendants for damages of more than USD $1 billion (with Tony Peto QC, Victoria Windle QC, Peter Head, Shane Sibbel and Andrew Trotter).
  • An appeal before the Supreme Court concerning the lawfulness of the trial of voter identification requirements in local government elections (with Hanif Mussa QC). 
  • The Getty Museum's case against the Italian Government before the European Court of Human Rights alleging violations of Convention rights in connection with forfeiture orders made over the "Getty Bronze" statue (with Tim Otty QC and Jason Pobjoy).
  • The Secretary of State for Justice's successful challenge to a decision of the Parole Board to direct the early release of an extended determinate sentence prisoner (with Sir James Eadie QC and Jason Pobjoy).

Before coming to the Bar, Madelaine practiced as a solicitor at a top-tier law firm in Australia. She also worked as in-house legal counsel on secondment to one of the top five FTSE 100 companies in Singapore, and as a legal intern at the International Energy Agency in Paris. At the University of Oxford, Madelaine's academic interests were primarily in commercial law, human rights and public international law. While completing her MPhil in Law on a topic of climate change litigation, Madelaine also worked as one of three lead Research Assistants for the University of Oxford's "Covid-19, Public Policy and Commercial Law" project commissioned following the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Madelaine commenced full-time practice on completion of her pupillage in September 2022.
